In honor of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the city of Surprise, in partnership with APS and the Northwest Black History Committee, is hosting a day of celebration and service on Saturday, January 14, 2017 in the outside courtyard at Surprise City Hall, located at 16000 N Civic Center Plaza.

We served at Park Wood Assisted Living @ 14581 W Parkwood Dr, Surprise, AZ 85374

We enjoyed with residence Wii sports, corn hole, learning to play pool, learning to crochet, lunch and BINGO. We also enjoyed sitting and visiting with the residence and hearing their stories of their education, home life as a teen, and adventures.

On Saturday, January 14, a group of sixth and eighth graders from Arizona Charter Academy in Surprise took part in the City of Surprise’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration and Service. Nineteen students, along with ACA math teacher Amie Lee, volunteered at Park Wood Assisted Living in Surprise. The group from ACA spent several hours at Park Wood, playing Wii Sports and corn hole with the residents, as well as learning how to play pool and to crochet. Everyone enjoyed eating lunch together, playing Bingo and hearing the residents’ stories of what life was like when they were teenagers. ACA’s National Junior Honor Society organized the volunteer project and the 19 students were made up of NJHS members and those who just wanted to give back to the community.
