For ACA high school students, community service means more than meeting a requirement or using it to pad their resumes for college. When students can get involved in giving back to a cause or helping their community in a way that matters to them, the lasting benefits can be far-reaching. As anyone who has ever volunteered knows, the satisfaction and pride that comes from helping others can be life changing.
Here’s just a few ways that are kids serve:
NHS Blood Drive: The National Honor Society hosted a Blood Drive in October for United Blood Services. They passed their goal of 20 registrations and had 32 people register to donate blood. Since January 2015 the National Honor Society had taken ACA from a Bronze level donor to a Silver level donor with the goal of becoming a gold level school this year. They were recently honored at a banquet in September for our blood donor program and received their first silver plaque.
Art is Alive Festival: This past week, members of the House of Fine Arts and Fashion Club, each volunteered 8 hours of manual labor to set up and tear down the WHAM Art festival at the Goodyear Ballpark. WHAM Art Association provides our students with art instruction and gallery space while our students provide a variety of support to their events and programs.
Thanksgiving and Christmas Food and Toy Drive: Every year our high school clubs lead the charge in providing food boxes for both Thanksgiving and Christmas and toys for Christmas to families in need. Last year they were able to serve 30 families with this year’s goal being 40. Please consider donating!
In today’s society people are busy and focused outside of their community, so to provide ways for our students to experience community service as part of their education makes sense. The true test will be to see if a large number of our students will keep up the trend and continue to make community service part of their lifestyle. We are confident that this will be the case and will continue to provide our students with the opportunities to give back to the community.
